Your Guide to Getting a Provisional Driving Licence

Ready to start learning to drive? The first step is getting your provisional driving licence. It might sound complicated, but it’s actually a simple process once you know what to do.

At The Driving Training Centre (The DTC), we’re here to guide you every step of the way. This quick guide covers everything you need to know to get started.

What is a Provisional Driving Licence?

A provisional driving licence allows you to legally start learning to drive in the UK. It lets you drive on public roads as long as you are supervised by a qualified instructor or an experienced driver.

How Do I Apply?

You can apply for a provisional licence online via the GOV.UK website or by post using a D1 form from the Post Office. Applying online is usually quicker and costs £34 (or £43 by post).

What Do I Need to Apply?

  • Proof of identity (such as a passport)
  • Your address history for the last 3 years
  • Your National Insurance number (if you have one)
  • A suitable photo (if required)

When Can I Apply?

You can apply for your provisional driving licence from age 15 years and 9 months, but you can only start driving a car when you turn 17.

What Can I Do With a Provisional Licence?

With a provisional licence, you can:

  • Start driving lessons with a qualified instructor
  • Practice driving with a suitable supervising driver
  • Begin preparing for your theory and practical tests

Important Rules to Remember

  • You must display L plates on the front and back of the car
  • You must be supervised by someone over 21 who has held a full licence for at least 3 years
  • You must be properly insured
  • You cannot drive on motorways unless with an approved instructor in a dual-controlled car

How Long Does It Take to Arrive?

Most provisional licences arrive within around 1 week when applying online, although it can take longer during busy periods.

Your Next Step: Start Driving Lessons

Once your provisional licence arrives, you’re ready to get behind the wheel and start learning. Many learners begin lessons straight away while studying for their theory test alongside.

At The DTC, our friendly instructors are here to help you build confidence, develop your skills, and pass your test as smoothly as possible.
