Who this is ideal for

Qualified ADIs

You already hold your green badge and want stronger local demand, less admin, and a better working relationship than a big franchise offers.

Part 3 / pink-badge trainees

You are working towards your ADI Part 3 or already hold a trainee (pink-badge) licence and want a school that can sponsor your supervision, give you real pupils, and transition you to a full franchise once you pass.

Franchise leavers

You are tired of high weekly fees, variable pupil supply, and being treated as expendable. You want a more personal alternative.

Career changers

You are exploring driving instruction as a new career and want to understand the qualification path, realistic earnings, and what support looks like.

The DTC vs a national franchise

How the process works

1

Tell us about your situation

Whether you are an ADI, a trainee, or exploring a career change — let us know where you are and what you want.

2

We discuss your area and goals

We look at where you want to work, what hours suit you, and what kind of support would make the biggest difference to your teaching.

3

Agree the right fit

If both sides feel the fit is right, we move forward with practical setup, clear expectations, and proper onboarding support.

4

Start building your diary

With enquiries, local visibility, and operational support behind you, you can focus on teaching well and growing steadily from a solid base.

Common questions about becoming an instructor

Do I need to be fully qualified to join The DTC?
No. We welcome both fully qualified ADIs and trainee instructors who are working towards their Part 3 qualification. Trainee instructors work under supervision and gain valuable real-world experience while completing their training. We can also train you to become an instructor.
How much can I earn as a driving instructor?
Earnings vary based on hours worked, lesson rates, and location. Full-time instructors typically earn £30,000–£40,000 per year, with potential for more through intensive courses, Pass Plus, and fleet training. Use the earnings calculator above to estimate your own figures.
What support does The DTC provide?
We handle incoming enquiries, scheduling, payment collection, and administrative tasks. You also get access to our in-house Driving School Management System (DSMS) — a connected platform that tracks pupil progress through the DVSA 27-skill syllabus, runs digital DL25 mock tests, automates lesson confirmations via SMS, syncs your diary to Google and Apple Calendar, and manages your finances. We also include bookkeeping and year-end accounting support to keep you HMRC Making Tax Digital for Income Tax ready.
How much is the franchise fee?
Our representative franchise fee is £70 per week. This covers enquiry handling, diary coordination, payment collection, and full access to the DTC DSMS. You also receive up to 4 franchise-free weeks per year, refunded on request.
Can I work part-time as an instructor?
Yes. Many of our instructors work part-time around other commitments. You control your diary and can increase or decrease your hours as needed. This flexibility is one of the most appealing aspects of the role.
What qualifications do I need?
To become an ADI, you need to pass three DVSA tests: Part 1 (theory), Part 2 (driving ability), and Part 3 (instructional ability). The process typically takes 6–12 months. Use the qualification stepper above to see each stage, DVSA fees, and booking links. Already qualified? You can join us immediately. Still training? We can discuss support while you complete Part 3.
