How long does it take to learn to drive?
Most learners need 40-50 hours of professional instruction, though this varies based on prior experience, practice frequency, and individual confidence. Our instructors tailor the pace to your progress.
Can I choose between manual and automatic lessons?
Yes. The DTC offers both manual and automatic driving lessons across all our service areas. Automatic lessons are ideal for learners who prefer a simpler gearbox, while manual lessons give you the flexibility to drive either type of vehicle.
Do you offer intensive driving courses?
Yes. Our intensive courses compress learning into a shorter timeframe — typically 1-3 weeks — for learners who need to pass quickly. These courses require availability for multiple lessons per week and are tailored to your starting ability.
What areas do you cover?
We cover Edinburgh, The Lothians, Dunfermline, Dumfries, Dunbar, Lockerbie, Musselburgh, Dalkeith, and Penicuik. Each area has dedicated instructors who know the local test routes.
How do I book my first lesson?
You can book by calling 0800 011 2122, texting 07850 907770, or filling out the contact form on our website. We will match you with an instructor in your area who suits your availability and learning style.
What is the Ready to Pass syllabus?
The DVSA Ready to Pass syllabus covers 27 driving skills across 8 groups, designed to build safe drivers for life. Your instructor scores each skill through five levels — Introduced, Helped, Prompted, Independent, and Reflection — so progress is tracked objectively, not guessed.
Can I see my progress between lessons?
Yes. The DTC learner portal syncs everything your instructor records, including syllabus scores, lesson notes, and mock-test results. You can log in at any time to see what is mastered, what is developing, and what to practise next.
How does The DTC know when I am ready for my test?
Readiness is based on data, not guesswork. The Ready to Pass engine weights your syllabus progress against real DVSA national fault data, mock-test results, and instructor observations. When your skills are consistently independent and mock tests are passing, your instructor will recommend booking the practical test.
What is a digital DL25 mock test?
The DL25 is the official DVSA driving-test report form. We have digitised it so your instructor can run a full mock test on a phone or tablet, tally faults automatically, and calculate a pass/fail result. The fault categories feed back into your focus areas so the next lesson targets what actually needs work.
How do lesson confirmations work?
When a lesson is booked the system sends you an SMS and email confirmation request. You reply YES or NO, or click confirm/decline in the email. Confirmation tokens expire 48 hours before the lesson, which is also our free-cancellation deadline, so both you and your instructor always have an up-to-date diary.
