Enquire with your area and preference, and we will match you with the right instructor.

Lesson types

Whether you are a complete beginner, part-trained, or preparing for a test, there is a lesson path that fits.

Most popular

Beginner lessons

Starting from scratch? We build your skills step by step — cockpit drills, moving off, steering, and basic junctions — until the fundamentals feel natural.

Transfer welcome

Part-trained learners

If you have had lessons before but stopped or switched instructors, we pick up where you left off and rebuild your confidence without starting over.

Your choice

Manual and automatic

Choose the transmission that fits your goals. Manual gives you more flexibility later; automatic lets you focus on road skills sooner. Both available depending on area.

Test-ready

Theory and practical test prep

Focused preparation for both tests — not just memorising answers, but understanding hazard perception, test routes, and how to handle the real thing calmly.

Fast-track

Intensive courses

Need to pass quickly? Block-book concentrated hours across a shorter period to build momentum and fast-track your readiness where your schedule allows.

Rebuild confidence

Refresher and post-licence

Passed your test but lost confidence? Moved to a busier area? Or just want to sharpen up after time off? Refresher sessions rebuild real-world driving assurance.

Specialist courses

Beyond standard weekly lessons, we offer focused programmes for specific goals and experience levels.

Why learners choose The DTC

A local service built around personal instruction, not a national call centre.

DVSA-approved instructors only

No trainee instructors. Every lesson is delivered by a fully qualified ADI focused on safe, confident driving.

Manual and automatic options

Learn in the car that matches your future needs. Not every area offers both, so we match you correctly first.

Lessons shaped around you

Your instructor adapts the pace, focus areas, and route selection to your progress and confidence — not a fixed syllabus.

Local test-route knowledge

Your instructor knows the local test routes and the junctions, roundabouts, and hazards you will actually face.

Multilingual support

English, Polish, Urdu, and Punjabi. Learn in the language that keeps you comfortable and focused.

Personal service, not a franchise

The DTC is a local business that treats learners and instructors as people, not account numbers.

Questions about driving lessons

How long does it take to learn to drive?
Most learners need 40-50 hours of professional instruction, though this varies based on prior experience, practice frequency, and individual confidence. Our instructors tailor the pace to your progress.
Can I choose between manual and automatic lessons?
Yes. The DTC offers both manual and automatic driving lessons across all our service areas. Automatic lessons are ideal for learners who prefer a simpler gearbox, while manual lessons give you the flexibility to drive either type of vehicle.
Do you offer intensive driving courses?
Yes. Our intensive courses compress learning into a shorter timeframe — typically 1-3 weeks — for learners who need to pass quickly. These courses require availability for multiple lessons per week and are tailored to your starting ability.
What areas do you cover?
We cover Edinburgh, The Lothians, Dunfermline, Dumfries, Dunbar, Lockerbie, Musselburgh, Dalkeith, and Penicuik. Each area has dedicated instructors who know the local test routes.
How do I book my first lesson?
You can book by calling 0800 011 2122, texting 07850 907770, or filling out the contact form on our website. We will match you with an instructor in your area who suits your availability and learning style.
