Winter Driving Tips: Stay Safe and Confident on the Road
Winter driving can be challenging for everyone, even for experienced drivers. Cold temperatures, icy roads, poor visibility, and unpredictable weather can all make driving more difficult than usual. That is why taking a little extra care during the colder months can make such a big difference.
At The Driving Training Centre (The DTC), safe driving is always our priority. Our experienced instructors help drivers build confidence in all types of conditions, and winter is no exception. To help you stay safe, prepared, and in control, we have put together our top winter driving tips for tackling the roads in cold, icy, or snowy weather.
1. Allow Extra Time for Your Journey
One of the most important winter driving tips is to give yourself more time than usual. Ice, frost, fog, and traffic delays can all slow your journey down, and rushing can easily lead to poor decisions behind the wheel.
Setting off earlier means you can take your time, drive more smoothly, and focus fully on the road ahead. A calm driver is often a safer driver, especially in difficult winter conditions.
2. Use Dipped Headlights in Poor Visibility
Winter weather often brings darker mornings, earlier evenings, mist, rain, and fog. Using your dipped headlights in poor visibility helps other road users see you more clearly and improves your own visibility too.
Remember, your lights are there to help you be seen as well as to help you see. Just make sure you switch them off when they are no longer needed to avoid dazzling other drivers.
3. Make Sure Your Windows Are Fully Clear
Before you begin your journey, always clear all snow and ice from the outside of your windows, mirrors, and lights. It is also important to demist the inside of your windows properly before setting off.
Your air conditioning can help remove condensation quickly and improve visibility inside the car. Driving without a clear view is dangerous and could also put you at risk of a fine, so it is always worth taking a few extra minutes to prepare properly.
4. Check Your Screen Wash Regularly
Winter roads can be muddy, wet, and covered in road salt, which can quickly make your windscreen dirty. Good visibility is essential, so make sure your screen wash is topped up and ready to use.
It is best to use a winter screen wash additive, as this helps prevent it from freezing in low temperatures. A clean windscreen gives you a much better view of the road and helps you spot hazards sooner.
5. Make Sure Your Tyres Are in Good Condition
Your tyres play a vital role in helping your car grip the road, especially in wet, icy, or snowy conditions. Check that your tyres have good tread depth and are inflated to the manufacturer’s recommended pressure.
Worn or under-inflated tyres can reduce your control and increase stopping distances, which is the last thing you want in winter weather. Keeping your tyres in good condition is one of the simplest ways to improve winter road safety.
Extra Winter Driving Advice
Alongside the essentials above, there are a few other sensible habits that can help you stay safer during the winter months:
- Drive smoothly and avoid sudden braking, steering, or acceleration.
- Leave a larger gap between you and the vehicle in front.
- Reduce your speed when road conditions are poor.
- Keep an eye on the weather forecast before travelling.
- Make sure your battery, wipers, and lights are all working properly.
Even short journeys can become more dangerous in winter, so taking a few simple precautions before you set off can make all the difference.
