How Test Swap works

A different date starts with another learner. Here’s how you get from your current booking to an agreed swap.

  1. Add your test

    Tell us your booked centre, date and time, add your booking reference, then choose where and when you’d rather take your test.

  2. Find a match

    We look for a learner whose test fits your preferences — and who wants yours. When a compatible swap is available, we send you an SMS so you can review the match.

  3. Both agree

    Review the proposed test in your private match room. You both need to accept; either learner can say no.

  4. Arrange the DVSA call

    Choose who will call and both consent to share booking references. Both learners need to be available for DVSA’s checks.

  5. Swap confirmed

    DVSA changes the bookings. Once they confirm, mark the swap complete in your match room so both listings can close.

Test swap questions

Is The DTC Test Swap officially connected to the DVSA?
No. The DTC is an independent driving school. The DTC Test Swap only helps learners find each other. The official swap is completed by phone with DVSA.
How much does it cost to swap a test?
The DTC Test Swap is free for learners. There is no subscription, success fee or matching fee. The DVSA does not charge for swapping a test with another learner.
Can I message the other learner directly?
No. The DTC Test Swap does not allow learners to contact each other directly. All communication goes through notifications from The DTC and your private match room.
How do I know the other learner is genuine?
Both learners verify their email and mobile number. Booking references are only shared after both sides explicitly consent, and the actual swap is completed directly with DVSA security checks.
What if the other learner cancels after we agree?
A swap is only final once DVSA has changed both bookings. If a match falls through before the DVSA call, you keep your original test slot and can search again.
Which tests can be swapped?
The appointments must be the same DVSA test category. Weekday tests match weekday tests; evening, weekend and bank-holiday tests match the same category. Extra-time and extended tests must also match their equivalent category.
What number do we call to complete the swap?
DVSA customer services is 0300 200 1122. Both learners must be available at the same time — the caller rings DVSA, and DVSA calls the other learner for security checks.
The DTC is not DVSA, DVLA, DVA, nidirect or GOV.UK. The DTC only facilitates peer-to-peer matching. Learners must complete the official swap directly with DVSA.
