I've been a driving instructor for 14 years, and I genuinely love what I do. As an approved instructor specialising in automatic transmission cars, I take the complexity of gears and clutch out of the picture so you can focus on the road ahead—and on building the habits that keep you safe. I believe confidence isn't just something you earn from passing your test; it has to be built, patiently and deliberately, one lesson at a time. My students often tell me that I've helped them go from nervous first-timers to self-assured, safety-conscious drivers, and that means the world to me. If you're looking for an instructor who cares as much about your confidence as I do about your safety, I'd love to work with you.

Is automatic right for you?

If coordinating the clutch and gears has been getting in the way, automatic lessons give you one less task to manage. You’ll still work on judging gaps, controlling your speed, spotting hazards and making decisions without prompts.

You can start as a complete beginner or transfer after manual lessons. Tell us what has gone well, what feels difficult and what you want to use your licence for.

Passing in an automatic gives you an automatic-only licence. To drive a manual car independently later, you need to pass a manual test. Read the GOV.UK licence guidance.

Time to learn, not just get there

We normally recommend a two-hour lesson for a new learner. It gives you time to reach suitable roads, practise properly and return to your pickup point without squeezing everything into an hour.

Early sessions cover smooth starting, stopping and low-speed control. As you progress, you’ll tackle busier junctions, hills, parking and independent driving. Your instructor will agree the lesson length and pace with you.

Edinburgh, and automatic lessons in Penicuik

Send us your pickup postcode and preferred days and times. We’ll check which automatic instructors cover your part of Edinburgh and whether their diary fits yours. Penicuik is automatic only; we do not offer manual lessons there.

Learning on Edinburgh roads

Start with roads that suit your confidence, then build experience of Edinburgh’s hills, bus lanes, tram crossings and busy junctions. Your instructor chooses practice around your pickup point and progress, not a fixed route.

When you’re ready, discuss preparation around Currie or Musselburgh with your instructor. A lesson place does not include a DVSA test appointment.

Questions about automatic lessons

Can I switch from manual lessons to automatic?
Yes. Tell us what you have already covered and what you would like help with. Your instructor will assess your driving in the automatic car and agree what to practise next; you do not need to start every skill again.
Will I need fewer lessons in an automatic?
Not necessarily. There is no clutch pedal or manual gear changing, but observation, judgement, parking and independent driving still need practice. The number of lessons depends on your experience and progress, not a guaranteed pass date.
Do you offer automatic lessons in Penicuik?
Yes. The DTC offers automatic-only lessons in Penicuik, subject to an instructor covering your pickup postcode and having suitable diary space. We do not offer manual lessons there.
Does the manual introductory offer apply to automatic lessons?
No. Edinburgh automatic lessons are £95 for two hours or £450 for a ten-hour block. The introductory manual offers are separate.
Can I learn in an automatic if I feel nervous?
Yes. Tell your instructor which situations worry you. You can agree a manageable starting point and review your confidence alongside your driving skills. Automatic tuition removes gear changes from the task, but it is not a promise that learning will be effortless.
