Changing your driving test appointment

Check your remaining changes, instructor availability and the official process before moving your test.

If your test date no longer works, speak to your instructor before choosing another appointment. You need both a suitable date and a car available for the test.

Use the official service

Start with GOV.UK’s change-your-test service. Check the current notice period, allowed changes and centre restrictions before confirming anything. Our previous article referred to three changes; the current car-test limit is normally two.

Changing a date and swapping are different

Moving into an available appointment is not the same as exchanging bookings with another learner. A learner-to-learner swap is handled by DVSA over the phone. Read the official swap instructions; do not try to coordinate two separate cancellations.

Before you confirm

  • Ask your instructor whether the new date gives you enough preparation time.
  • Check the instructor and car are available at the new centre.
  • Review the details carefully before using a booking change.
  • Check your appointment in the official service afterwards.

The DTC Test Swap can help you look for another learner with a compatible booking. It cannot move your test for you.
