Swapping Your Driving Test With Another Learner Driver: What You Need to Know
Finding a suitable driving test date can be stressful. If you already have a test booked but another learner has a slot that works better for you, you may be able to swap. However, the rules are strict, and the swap must be arranged directly with DVSA by phone.
This guide explains what a driving test swap is, who can do it, what information you need, the deadline rules, what not to share with another learner, and how to avoid common mistakes before calling DVSA.
What is a driving test swap?
A driving test swap is when two learner drivers exchange their existing car driving test bookings. You are not searching for a new test slot, and you are not changing your booking to a random available date. You and another learner must both already have a test booked, and you must both want each other’s exact test date, time and test centre.
Swapping a driving test counts as one of the two changes you are allowed to make to your test booking, so it should not be used casually.
| Action | What it means | Key point |
|---|---|---|
| Swapping your test | You exchange your existing test booking with another learner driver. | Both learners must already have a booking and both must agree. |
| Changing your test | You move your test to another available date, time or test centre through the normal booking system. | You are not exchanging with another specific learner. |
| Using a cancellation service or third party | A third party may claim to find or manage test slots for you. | DVSA says other people, websites and driving instructors cannot swap a test for you. |
Who can swap a driving test?
From 12 May 2026, learners can only swap their own car driving test with another learner driver. The swap cannot be carried out for you by a driving instructor, family member, website, social media account or third-party service.
Both learners must want to swap with each other’s exact test slot. If one person only wants a different test centre, or only wants a different time, that is not enough. The swap is an exchange of the two existing bookings.
Important: It is against the law for other people, including driving instructors or websites, to swap a driving test for someone else. Only the learner drivers involved should take part in the swap process.
Driving test swap eligibility checklist
Before calling DVSA, both learner drivers should check that they meet the rules. If either learner fails one of the checks, the swap may not go ahead.
| Requirement | What DVSA requires | What you should check |
|---|---|---|
| Both learners have a test booked | You can only swap existing bookings. | Make sure both learners have confirmed booking references. |
| Both learners want each other’s exact slot | The date, time and test centre must be the slot each learner wants. | Confirm the details carefully before calling. |
| Both learners have at least one allowed change left | Each learner is allowed two changes. A swap uses one of them. | Do not call if either learner has already used both changes. |
| The swap is requested early enough | You must request it at least 10 full working days before the earliest of the two tests. | Remember that Monday to Saturday count as working days. Sundays and public holidays do not count. |
| The location rule is met | The allowed test centre rules must be met for both learners. | Check the current location rules before calling DVSA. |
| The test type matches | You can only swap with the same type of test booking. | Check whether both tests are weekday, weekend/evening, extra time or extended tests. |
Location rules and test centre restrictions
The location rules are date-sensitive. Before 9 June 2026, a learner can swap with someone booked at any driving test centre. From 9 June 2026, swaps are restricted by test centre location.
From that date, you can only swap with a learner whose test is booked at the same test centre as you, one of the three nearest test centres to you, or the test centre you first booked at. The rule must be met for both learners, not just one of you.
| Date | Location rule | What learners should do |
|---|---|---|
| Before 9 June 2026 | You can swap with a learner booked at any driving test centre. | Still check that both instructors are available for the new centre. |
| From 9 June 2026 | You can only swap within the allowed location rules. | Check whether the other learner’s test centre is the same centre, one of your three nearest centres, or your first-booked centre. |
| For both learners | The location rule must work both ways. | Do not assume it works because it suits one learner. It must be valid for both bookings. |
Why the test type must match
You can only swap with another learner who has the same type of car driving test booking. This matters because different test types may have different prices, arrangements or requirements.
| Your booking type | You can swap with | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Weekday car driving test | Another weekday car driving test. | Standard weekday test fees and availability differ from out-of-hours tests. |
| Evening, weekend or bank holiday test | Another evening, weekend or bank holiday test. | These tests are charged differently and must match the same type. |
| Test with extra time | Another test with extra time. | Extra time may be arranged for a disability, health condition or learning difficulty. |
| Extended driving test | Another extended driving test of the same type. | Extended tests for disqualified drivers have specific booking types and fees. |
Check your driving instructor is available
Before attempting a swap, both learners should speak to their driving instructors. A test slot is only useful if your instructor agrees you are ready and can attend the test at the new date, time and centre.
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Do you think I will be ready by the new date? | A sooner slot is not always better if you are not test ready. |
| Are you available at the new date and time? | Your instructor may already have lessons, tests or personal commitments booked. |
| Can we use your car at the new test centre? | Some instructors may not cover every test centre or area. |
| Do I need extra lessons before the new date? | A swapped slot may change your lesson plan and preparation time. |
| Is the new test centre suitable for me? | Different areas may involve different road layouts, traffic conditions and route challenges. |
How to swap your driving test
You can only swap your driving test by phone. DVSA says you cannot arrange a swap online, by email, webchat, text message, WhatsApp, social media or through a third party.
Both learners need to be available at the same time. You do not have to be physically together, because DVSA will call the other learner using the phone number recorded on their booking.
| Method | Can you use it? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Phone DVSA | Yes | This is the official method for arranging a swap. |
| Online booking system | No | You can change bookings online, but DVSA says swaps must be done by phone. |
| No | DVSA will not complete swaps by email. | |
| Webchat or text message | No | These channels cannot be used for test swaps. |
| WhatsApp or social media | No | Do not share personal details or booking information through social media accounts. |
| Driving instructor or website doing it for you | No | Only the learner drivers involved can complete the swap process. |
What to do before you call DVSA
Preparation matters. If the details are wrong, the other learner does not answer, or either of you fails the security checks, the swap will not be completed and both bookings will stay the same.
| Information or action | Who needs it? | Important note |
|---|---|---|
| Your driving licence number | The learner who calls DVSA. | Use this for security checks. Do not share it with the other learner. |
| Your driving test booking reference number | The learner who calls DVSA. | You will need your own booking reference. |
| Other learner’s booking reference number | The learner who calls DVSA. | DVSA says you will need this, but not the other learner’s name or contact details. |
| Payment card details used to book your test | The learner who calls DVSA, unless the instructor booked before the rule change. | DVSA will never ask for the full card number or security code. |
| Details about previous driving tests | The learner who calls DVSA. | Have this information ready for security checks. |
| Correct phone number and email on both bookings | Both learners. | DVSA will use the contact details already recorded on each booking. |
Tip: Before calling, sign in to check your driving test appointment details and make sure your phone number and email address are correct. Updating contact details does not use one of your allowed test changes.
How the DVSA phone call works
One learner calls DVSA to request the swap. DVSA carries out security checks, confirms the caller agrees, then uses the other learner’s booking reference number to contact the second learner. DVSA will only call the phone number recorded on the second learner’s booking.
| Step | What happens | What learners should remember |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | One learner calls DVSA to request the swap. | Both learners should already be free and ready to take part. |
| 2 | DVSA completes security checks with the caller. | The caller must confirm they agree to the swap. |
| 3 | The caller gives DVSA the other learner’s booking reference number. | DVSA will not need the other learner’s name or contact details from you. |
| 4 | DVSA puts the caller on hold and calls the other learner. | The second learner must answer the phone number on their booking. |
| 5 | DVSA completes security checks with the second learner. | The second learner must agree to the swap. |
| 6 | DVSA returns to the caller and completes the swap. | Note the new test date, time and centre carefully. |
DVSA customer services can be contacted on 0300 200 1122. Select option 1 and follow the prompts. The published opening hours are Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm.
What happens after the swap?
Once the swap is completed, each learner gets the other person’s original driving test date, time and test centre. Both booking records are updated, but you will keep your own booking reference number, payment details and any special requirements that were already added to your booking.
You will not receive an email confirmation immediately after the swap. DVSA says the next reminder email you receive about your test will show the new details, so make sure you write down your new test slot during or immediately after the call.
| Item | What happens? | Learner action |
|---|---|---|
| Test date, time and centre | These change to the other learner’s original slot. | Write down the new details clearly. |
| Booking record | Both learners’ records are updated. | Check your appointment details after the swap. |
| Booking reference number | You keep your own booking reference. | Do not expect to receive the other learner’s reference as your new one. |
| Payment details | You keep your own payment details. | Do not share card information with another learner. |
| Special requirements | Any special requirements already on your booking stay with your booking. | Check that your requirements are still shown correctly. |
| Email confirmation | You will not get an immediate email confirmation. | Look out for the next DVSA reminder email with the new details. |
Personal data and scam safety
Learners should be very careful about what they share with another person. DVSA says you should never give another learner your driving licence number, theory test pass certificate number, address, phone number, email address or payment card details.
The person calling DVSA will need the other learner’s driving test booking reference number, but DVSA will not ask for the other learner’s name or contact details. DVSA will contact the other learner using the phone number already on their booking.
| Information | Share with another learner? | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Driving test booking reference number | Yes, this may be needed for DVSA to identify the booking. | The caller needs the other learner’s booking reference number for the swap request. |
| Driving licence number | No | This is personal information used for security checks. |
| Theory test pass certificate number | No | Do not share unnecessary personal booking information. |
| Address, phone number or email address | No | DVSA uses the contact details already saved on the booking. |
| Payment card details | No | DVSA will never ask for the full card number or security code to complete a swap. |
| Social media login or account details | No | Never allow a person or website to manage the swap for you. |
Quick learner checklist before trying to swap
Use this checklist before calling DVSA. It can save time and reduce the chance of the swap failing.
| Check | Yes or no? | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Do both learners already have a car driving test booked? | Must be yes | You can only swap existing bookings. |
| Do both learners want each other’s exact slot? | Must be yes | The swap is an exchange, not a search for alternatives. |
| Does each learner have at least one allowed change left? | Must be yes | A swap counts as one of the two allowed changes. |
| Is the swap at least 10 full working days before the earliest test? | Must be yes | DVSA will not complete the swap if the request is too late. |
| Do the test centre location rules work for both learners? | Must be yes | From 9 June 2026, location restrictions apply. |
| Are both test types the same? | Must be yes | Weekday, out-of-hours, extra-time and extended tests must match their own type. |
| Have both learners checked instructor availability? | Strongly recommended | Your instructor needs to agree you are ready and be available for the new slot. |
| Are both learners free to answer the phone at the same time? | Must be yes | DVSA must speak to both learners to complete the swap. |
| Are both bookings showing the correct phone number and email? | Must be yes | DVSA will call the number recorded on the booking. |
Final advice for learners
Swapping a driving test can be useful if you and another learner genuinely want each other’s slots, but it is not a shortcut around the official booking system. The rules are strict, the swap must be done by phone, and both learners need to pass DVSA security checks and agree to the swap.
- Check that both learners already have a test booked.
- Make sure both learners want the exact swap.
- Check that both learners have at least one allowed change left.
- Check the 10 full working day deadline.
- Check test centre location rules and matching test types.
- Speak to your instructor before calling DVSA.
- Never share personal or payment details with another learner or third-party service.
A better test date is only helpful if you are ready, your instructor is available and the swap is completed properly through DVSA.
