What to take to your driving test

Check your documents the evening before your test, then agree the pickup time and car arrangements with your instructor. Finding a missing licence on the morning is avoidable stress.

Your documents

Take your UK driving licence and your theory pass certificate if you have it. DVSA can check your theory result if you have lost the certificate. A paper licence needs a valid passport too; Northern Ireland licence holders need the photocard and counterpart.

Read DVSA’s document requirements if your licence is lost or your name has changed. There is no general medical-certificate item on this checklist; follow any specific instructions DVSA has given you.

The car

If you are using your instructor’s car, confirm it is available for your appointment. If you are bringing your own, check all of DVSA’s car requirements, including insurance for the test, vehicle tax, MOT where required, suitable tyres, L plates and an extra interior mirror for the examiner. A tax disc is not required.

Things that make the day easier

• Bring the glasses or contact lenses you need for driving.
• Wear shoes you are comfortable driving in.
• Keep your appointment details handy and follow the centre’s arrival instructions.
• Ask your instructor any last-minute questions before you arrive.
