Waiting for a driving test: planning your lessons
Keep your preparation realistic while you wait, and check any proposed date with your instructor.

A long gap before your test can make it difficult to decide how often to take lessons. Talk to your instructor about what you still need to learn and how to keep those skills fresh without simply repeating the same lesson.
Check appointments at the source
Availability changes. Use the official booking service rather than treating a published average or another learner’s experience as a prediction for your centre.
Agree a plan
- Identify the skills that still need regular practice.
- Review the plan when your test date or circumstances change.
- If you can practise privately, agree suitable practice with your instructor and check supervision and insurance first.
If a different date appears
Check that you are ready and that your instructor and car are available. An earlier appointment is not automatically a better one. Read the current booking-change rules before making a change.
