1. Understanding the Provisional Driving Licence
Your provisional driving licence is essential for anyone who wants to learn to drive in the UK. It allows you to practice driving with an instructor or a qualified driver over the age of 21 who has held a full driving licence for at least three years.
When Can You Apply?
- You can apply for your provisional driving licence when you turn 15 years and 9 months old.
- You must be at least 17 years old to start driving a car.
2. How to Apply for Your Provisional Driving Licence
Applying for your provisional driving licence is a straightforward process. You can do this online or by post. Here’s how:

Online Application Process
- Visit the official UK government website for driving licences.
- Provide your personal information, including your name, address, date of birth, and National Insurance number.
- Upload a recent passport-style photo if required.
- Pay the application fee, which is currently £34.
Postal Application Process
- Download and print the D1 application form from the DVLA website.
- Complete the form and send it to the DVLA along with your payment and a passport-style photo.
- The postal application fee is £43.
3. What Happens After You Apply?
Once your application is submitted, you will receive your provisional driving licence in the post. This usually takes about three weeks if you apply online or up to 10 weeks if you apply via post.
Remember: You cannot start driving until you have received your provisional licence!
