Apply for your First Provisional Driving Licence
Your first step toward learning to drive is getting your provisional licence sorted properly.
What this is
Before you can start driving on public roads as a learner, you need a provisional driving licence. The official application is handled by DVLA through GOV.UK.
What you usually need before applying
- You normally need to be at least 15 years and 9 months old to apply.
- You must meet the minimum eyesight requirements for driving.
- You need to be able to provide identity and address history details.
- You may be asked for a UK passport number if you apply online.
What happens next
Once DVLA approves the application and your licence arrives, you can begin learning with the right supervision and learner requirements in place. Most people start actual car lessons from age 17.
DTC advice
- Apply early, especially if you want to start lessons close to your 17th birthday.
- Make sure the name and address you use are accurate and current.
- Keep your provisional safe, because you will need it for both theory and practical test bookings.
