Learn to Drive a Car: Step by Step
A plain-English summary of the official GOV.UK learner driver pathway. Build the skills to drive safely and independently with a DVSA-approved instructor.
1. Check you are allowed to drive
Most learners start car driving in the UK from age 17. Before anything else, make sure you meet the age, eyesight, residency, and legal eligibility requirements for holding a UK provisional driving licence and learning on public roads.
2. Apply for your provisional licence
Your provisional licence unlocks the rest of the learner journey, including lessons on the road and booking both theory and practical tests. Apply through the official DVLA service online, and keep your licence safe as you will need it for every step ahead.
3. Start lessons and build road awareness
A good DVSA-approved instructor helps you develop safe driving habits from the very first lesson, not just basic car control. Aim for consistent weekly lessons rather than long gaps, so that what you learn stays fresh and you progress smoothly.
4. Study and practise for your theory test
You need a theory test pass before you can book the practical driving test. The theory test covers the Highway Code, road signs, and hazard perception, and you should revise using the official DVSA materials rather than relying on unofficial question banks alone. DVSA data shows learners who take professional lessons before their theory test are more likely to pass first time.
5. Build the skills to drive safely and independently
As your confidence improves, your lessons should move from general practice into consistent independent driving at test standard. This includes mirror checks, junctions, roundabouts, manoeuvres, and the kind of safe decision-making that prepares you for real-world driving after you pass.
6. Take your practical test when your instructor agrees you are ready
Book your practical driving test on GOV.UK only when your instructor confirms you can drive safely on your own. Prepare with focused mock-test practice and by driving in the test area in the weeks before your test.
