How to Book Your Driving Theory Test
Your theory test is a major milestone, and getting the basics right makes the whole process much smoother.
The short answer
The car theory test combines 50 multiple-choice questions with 14 hazard-perception clips. You need your provisional licence, you must pass both parts in the same sitting, and regular practice is more effective than last-minute revision.

Have your provisional licence ready
You need a valid UK provisional driving licence before you can book a theory test with DVSA. If you do not have one yet, apply through DVLA first and wait for it to arrive, which usually takes about one week for online applications.

Revise the Highway Code, road signs, and hazard perception
Spend time on the official DVSA theory test revision materials. Understand the reasons behind the rules rather than memorising answers, and practise hazard perception clips regularly to build anticipation habits that show up in your real driving too.

Choose a test centre and time
Pick a DVSA theory test centre that is convenient for you and a time that lets you arrive relaxed rather than rushed. There is no advantage to booking the earliest available slot if you are not yet ready for the test content itself.

Book through the official GOV.UK service
Use the official DVSA booking service at gov.uk/booktheorytest rather than third-party resellers. Third-party sites add booking fees without providing any benefit, and you may end up with less flexible change or cancellation terms.

Prepare for test day
Bring your provisional licence to the test centre, arrive at least 15 minutes early, and remember the format: 50 multiple-choice questions plus 14 hazard perception video clips, with pass marks of 43 out of 50 and 44 out of 75 respectively.
