How to Book Your Practical Driving Test
Booking your practical too early can add pressure. Booking it at the right time can sharpen your preparation.

Pass your theory test first, then agree the timing with your instructor. A suitable booking date is one that gives you enough time to become consistently safe and independent—not simply the first slot you can find.

Pass your theory test first
You must have a valid theory test pass before you can book a practical driving test with DVSA. Book your theory early so the practical can follow once you are driving to test standard, and so that test centre waiting times do not block your progress.

Get your instructor to confirm you are ready
Your driving instructor should see consistent test-standard driving before you book, not just isolated good lessons. Agree that you are ready and ask for your instructor's reference number so the booking service can check their availability.

Gather your documents and details
You will need your valid UK provisional driving licence and a realistic idea of which test centre and date suit your preparation. The 2026 rules mean only the learner can book and manage their own car test.

Book on GOV.UK
Use the official DVSA service at gov.uk/bookdrivingtest. Choose a centre you genuinely intend to use and a date you realistically expect to be ready for. You can make only 2 changes after booking, and a moved test can go only to one of the 3 nearest centres.

Build broad, independent driving experience
Practise a varied mix of roads, junctions, roundabouts and speed changes with your instructor. The aim is to respond safely to whatever happens on the test, rather than memorising a route.

Prepare for test day itself
Know the show-me tell-me questions, bring your documents in good order, allow time for the eyesight check, and understand the test format. A focused mock-test lesson the day before can settle nerves and reinforce any weak spots your instructor flags.
