What is Pass Plus?
Pass Plus is a DVSA-recognised post-test training course that takes at least six hours. It covers six modules designed to reduce your risk of accidents in the first year after passing.
Why do it?
- Build motorway confidence safely
- Reduce insurance premiums with some insurers
- Learn all-weather and night driving skills
- Fill gaps left by standard test preparation
- Gain experience with an instructor present
How it works
- Minimum six hours of practical training
- No formal test — assessed continuously
- Modules can be split across multiple sessions
- Certificate issued on completion
- Some insurers offer discounts for Pass Plus
The six Pass Plus modules
Each module is a practical, on-road session. You do not need to cover them in order — your instructor shapes the course around your weakest areas.
Town driving
Complex junctions, multi-lane roundabouts, bus lanes, and heavy traffic. Build confidence in urban environments where most post-test accidents occur.
All-weather driving
Rain, fog, ice, and low sun. Learn how speed, following distance, and observation change when conditions deteriorate.
Rural roads
Narrow lanes, blind bends, farm traffic, and varying surfaces. Understand safe overtaking and how to read the road ahead on country routes.
Night driving
Reduced visibility, dazzle from oncoming lights, and judging speed and distance in darkness. Essential for winter commuting.
Dual carriageways
Slip roads, lane discipline, safe overtaking, and exiting at speed. Gain the confidence to handle faster roads calmly.
Motorways
Joining, lane discipline, smart motorways, service areas, and breakdown procedures. Motorway driving is the module most new drivers want help with.
Who should take Pass Plus?
Newly qualified drivers
Statistically, the first 12 months after passing are the riskiest. Pass Plus closes the experience gap quickly with structured, supervised practice.
Nervous motorway drivers
If the thought of merging onto the M8 or M90 fills you with dread, the motorway module builds confidence methodically with an instructor beside you.
Drivers wanting insurance discounts
Some insurers recognise Pass Plus and offer reduced premiums. Check with your provider — the saving can cover the course cost.
Drivers returning after a break
If you passed years ago but have not driven much since, Pass Plus refreshes core skills and introduces modern road features like smart motorways.
Insurance discounts
Many insurers recognise Pass Plus as evidence of advanced training. While discounts vary by provider and driver profile, some newly qualified drivers save enough on their first-year premium to offset the entire course cost. Ask your insurer if they offer a Pass Plus discount.
Pricing
Pass Plus is billed at the standard hourly rate for your area and transmission type. The full course is a minimum of six hours, though some learners benefit from extra time on motorways or night driving. Block booking discounts apply.
Areas covered
Pass Plus runs across Edinburgh, The Lothians, Fife, and Dumfries & Galloway. Motorway modules use the M8, M90, A1(M), or A74(M) depending on your location.
